Physical Cryptocurrency

Physical cryptocurrency refers to tangible objects that represent digital cryptocurrency, often in the form of coins, tokens, or other physical media. These items contain a private key or a code that allows access to the corresponding digital cryptocurrency under a tamper-resistant seal or hologram. The value of physical cryptocurrency comes from two sources: the digital Bitcoin it represents and its collectible value. The collectible value may exceed the digital value, especially if the item is rare, made from precious metals, or has historical significance. Overall, physical cryptocurrency represents a unique intersection of digital and tangible assets, appealing to collectors, investors, and enthusiasts who value both the artistic and functional aspects of these items.

Casascius Bitcoins

The Casascius coin, introduced by Mike Caldwell in 2011, was one of the first physical bitcoins, embedding real Bitcoin and offering a secure way to store and display digital currency in a physical form. Casascius physical Bitcoins were sold until Nov 26, 2013. Starting with simple brass 1 btc coins, he expanded production until ending sales over two years later due to allegations by the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network, or FINCEN, of running a ‘money transmitting’ business which requires various special licences.

Announced on September 6th of 2011, this coin is one of the first batch of physical Bitcoins ever produced which was funded on Nov 24th, 2011 when BTC was $2.32 USD. Sought after both for their significance as the first coin of their type in the crypto universe, but also due to the added perception of rarity due to a spelling error (Casascius is spelled as ‘CASACIUS’) in the small hologram text.
